Women's Tennis Beats Tennessee Tech 4-3 on the Road (4/8/08)
TENNIS TEAMS SPLIT WITH TENNESSEE
TECH ON THE ROAD
Cookeville, Tenn. – The Belmont tennis teams split with Tennessee Tech in non-conference matches played Tuesday evening in Cookeville, Tennessee. The women won 4-3, while the men fell 6-0. On the women’s side, the singles matches were played first. With Belmont’s Tatiana Pozo unavailable for the match due to injury, the homestanding Eagles picked up wins at the numbers two, three, and five positions to take an early 3-1 lead (Tech defaulted at number six ). The Bruins stormed back to tie the match as freshman Abby Leatherwood won at number four over Katie Barnhill and at number one, junior Whitnie Warren came back from three points down in the third set tiebreak to defeat Kelly Holtzhausen 0-6, 7-5, 7-6. In doubles, Tech defaulted at the number three position and when Whitnie Warren and Katie Rhodes won at number one 8-5 over Holtzhausen and Barnhill, Belmont clinched the match victory 4-3. In the men’s match, the Bruins faced a formidable opponent in Tennessee Tech, one of the top teams in the OVC. The Golden Eagles won all six singles matches in straight sets to earn the 6-0 victory. The doubles matches were not played since the match had been decided. Belmont is back in action Wednesday afternoon as they host Lipscomb in the tennis version of “The Battle of the Boulevard.” The match begins at 2:00pm at the Davis Complex.
