Women's Tennis Defeats Florida Gulf Coast 4-3 (4/4/08)
TENNIS TEAMS SPLIT WITH FLORIDA
GULF COAST
The Bruins Host Stetson on Saturday Nashville, Tenn. – The Belmont tennis teams split their Atlantic Sun Conference matches with Florida Gulf Coast on Friday evening. The women won 4-3, while the men fell 5-2. The matches were played indoors at the Belle Meade Country Club. On the women’s side, the match started with singles. The Bruins lost at the first two positions, but stormed back and won three of the last four singles matches. Junior Tatiana Pozo won at number three over Lauren Pfeiffer 6-3, 6-3. Freshman Abby Leatherwood won at number five over Leah Johnson in straight sets, while fellow freshman Lindsay Bennett (pictured right) beat Brett Kinley in three sets at number six. With the match tied 3-3, the doubles matches would decide the winner. Belmont won at number one as Pozo and Linda Johansson defeated Braniecka and Vaughn 8-4. The Bruins lost at number two doubles, but clinched the match victory as Leatherwood and Pence defeated Kinley and Johnson 8-1. In the men’s match, FGCU won four of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches to clinch the 5-2 victory over the Bruins. BU’s Ignacio Gesto did win at number one as he defeated Ricardo Hernandez 6-3, 6-3, while freshman Felipe Cirne Lima won at number by default over Mikkel Muller.
