BU Alum Brenton Flynn Falls in the First Round of Match Play at the U.S. Amateur

Tulsa, Okla . – Belmont alum Brenton Flynn (’06) fell in the first round of match play at the 109th U.S. Amateur Championship held Wednesday at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Flynn, who advanced to match play Wednesday morning after surviving a 28-man playoff, fell to former Florida golfer Will Strickler of Gainesville, Florida 2&1 in a first round match Wednesday afternoon. In the match, Brenton took an early 1-up lead with a par on number one, but Strickler evened the match on the next hole. Strickler took a 1-up lead with a par on number five and then stretched the lead to 3-up with a birdie on the par-3 8th hole. Flynn cut the lead back to 1-up with a par on the 12th hole, but could not get any closer. Strickler went dormie in the match with a birdie on the 16th hole and the match ended when Flynn failed to win the 17th hole. This event closed out an outstanding summer for the Flynn. In addition to qualifying for the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur, he advanced to U.S. Open sectional qualifying in June and played in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in July.
