Charleston, S.C. – The Belmont men’s golf team finished in fifth place at the 2008 Stono Cup held this week at the Links at Stono Ferry in Charleston, South Carolina. In addition, junior Stuart Ashwood finished third in the individual standings.

The Bruins posted a team score of 302 in Tuesday’s final round to give them a 54-hole score of 895, which moved Belmont up to fifth place. They finished 11 shots behind tournament champion Stephen F. Austin, who posted an 884 for two days.

Junior Stuart Ashwood had his best finish as a collegian. The Northhampton, England native carded a two-under par 70 on Tuesday to finish in third place with a score of 216 (even par). It was also the highest by a Belmont golfer this season. Ashwood finished five shots behind individual medalist Kyle Robbins of Stephen F. Austin.

Belmont also had two golfers finish among the top-25. Senior Danny Amundson posted his third straight top-15 finish as he placed in a tie for 15th with a 54-hole score 223. Fellow South Dakotan and junior Scott O’Brien placed in a tie for 21st after carding a 227 for three rounds. Other Belmont scores included: junior Simon Marshall (T-32nd, 234) and junior Gaylon Cude (T-38th, 242).

The men’s golf team will be back on the course next Monday and Tuesday, October 13-14, at the UT-Martin Skyhawk Classic held at Paris Landing State Park in Paris, Tennessee.
